Remember When You Were Great? Try again...

For most of us, the greatness we once had occurred within a group of people such as a sports team, music ensemble, dance team, etc. Your greatness probably actualized itself within a team. The team made you great. Then it came time for you to move on and you were left alone with your talent, accumulated knowledge and memories- memories of what it was like on top of that mountain. No matter what you "Mountain" is, you were at the top and after a certain amount of time, you had to say goodbye to the summit with the heartache that one has when they say goodbye to a long-distanced lover.

A form of depression and self-doubt moves in like fog descending upon a lake. You question yourself and who you are. Are you as great as you once were? You will either decide that you aren't or....climb the mountain again. This time, you want to share the experience. When you do climb the mountain again, every thing comes back to you. How to do it, how fast to go, potential mistakes, the feeling of seeing everything from the top. In particular times, you will glance to see the faces of those you brought with you. Their sense of wonder makes it all worth it. As a leader, you realize that one of the most irreplaceable feelings is when you help others succeed.

So? So lead them to the tops of mountains you've climbed. Attempt to climb brand new mountain tops. Strive to always become more. Partner with other leaders to lead. Become a model follower. One of the hardest processes I've ever gone through is the leadership truth that great leaders are great followers. I was not always a great follower. In fact, often I still struggle with it. There are a million reasons why you shouldn't climb that mountain or push to try new things or to bring others with you. A million reasons. So? What are you going to do? Lead them.

1. What is your "Mountain" on which you've been to the top?

2. How long were you there or how long have you been on top of the "mountain"?

3. How long has it been since you were at the top?

4. Are you ready to go again? Who will you bring with you?

5. What are you waiting for? What are you afraid of?
